Ingredients
- 2 slices sourdough bread
- 40 grams unsalted butter
- 60 grams sharp cheddar cheese
- 40 grams gruyere cheese
Preparation
- Butter one side of each bread slice evenly
- Grate both cheeses and mix them together for an even melt
- Place one slice butter-side down in a cold pan
- Pile the cheese mixture high on the bread
- Top with the second slice butter-side up
- Cook over medium-low heat for 5 minutes per side until the bread is dark golden and the cheese has completely melted
Tips
- Grate your own cheese rather than using pre-shredded packs for a smoother melt
- Use a lid to cover the pan briefly if the cheese is not melting fast enough
- Spread a thin layer of mayonnaise on the outside for a deeper golden crunch
