Recipe for Banana Split
A classic American dessert that combines fresh fruit, ice cream, and indulgent toppings in one dish. Quick and easy to assemble, it’s perfect for satisfying a sweet tooth without any cooking.
Portion: Serves 1–2 people
Preparation time: 10 minutes
Ingredients
The Base
- 1 medium banana (ripe but firm)
The Ice Cream (Classic Trio)
- 1 scoop vanilla ice cream
- 1 scoop chocolate ice cream
- 1 scoop strawberry ice cream
(Optional: Use 3 scoops of vanilla for a diner-style version)
The Sauces
- Chocolate syrup (or hot fudge)
- Optional: Strawberry sauce and pineapple topping
The Toppings
- Whipped cream (canned or fresh)
- Chopped nuts (peanuts or walnuts)
- 1 maraschino cherry
Instructions
- Prep the banana: Peel the banana and slice it lengthwise. Place the halves along the sides of a long dish or shallow bowl.
- Add the ice cream: Position the three scoops between the banana slices, typically with vanilla in the center, flanked by chocolate and strawberry.
- Drizzle the sauces: Pour chocolate syrup over the ice cream. If using multiple sauces, a classic method is pineapple on vanilla, chocolate on strawberry, and strawberry sauce on chocolate.
- Add whipped cream: Top each ice cream scoop with a generous mound of whipped cream.
- Sprinkle the nuts: Scatter chopped nuts over the whipped cream and banana.
- Finish with the cherry: Place a maraschino cherry on the center mound of whipped cream.
- Serve: Enjoy immediately with a long spoon and napkins handy.
Tips
- Use a firm banana to prevent it from breaking under the ice cream.
- Slightly soften ice cream for easier scooping and layering.
- Customize toppings with sprinkles, chocolate chips, or caramel sauce for extra indulgence.
- For a fancier presentation, chill the dish beforehand to keep the ice cream from melting too quickly
