Recipe for a German Poppy Seed Cake

Base

  • 250 grams flour
  • 125 grams butter
  • 60 grams sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 5 grams salt

Filling

  • 500 milliliters milk
  • 100 grams sugar
  • 150 grams ground poppy seeds
  • 40 grams semolina

Preparation

Base

  1. Mix the flour, butter, sugar, and egg to form a firm shortcrust dough
  2. Press the dough into a springform tin and chill for thirty minutes total
  3. Prick the base with a fork and bake at 180 Celsius for ten minutes

Filling

  1. Boil milk and sugar then stir in poppy seeds and semolina until thick
  2. Let the filling cool slightly then pour it over the pre-baked pastry base
  3. Bake the entire cake at 170 Celsius for forty-five minutes until the center sets
